A big achievement by Michael Sarro who won the Nevada State Amateur Championship on Sunday. If there were any doubts about his talents and skills, they have been put to rest. Sarro coasted to a 3 shot victory at Reflection Bay Golf Club in Lake Las Vegas.
The young golf star, who is a 2019 graduate from Coronado High School, shot a final-round 66 to shoot an impressive 12-under 204, the total for three rounds. He finished three shots ahead of Hazen Newman and four shots better than Ben Sawaia.
It capped a near-perfect weekend for Sarro, who made his only bogey on his second hole Friday before tacking on 13 birdies the rest of the way, going lower each day the tournament unfolded. “I hit the ball extremely well, probably the best I ever have,” Sarro said. “I really didn’t make any mistakes out there.”Sarro went 71-67-66 for the week and said that his putting improved each day as he adjusted to playing on greens, getting baked in the 110-plus degree heat.
Both Sarro and Newman know each other quite well and have played tons of junior events against one another before graduating in 2019. In their senior year, Sarro won team state as well as the individual state title, an achievement he thinks propelled his win on Sunday. He said, “It helped me out big time today. It taught me how to succeed.” But this win was even bigger to Sarro. “Winning this championship was better,” he said. “Bigger tournament. Better field.”
